Why do we need to know Newton’s First Law? It is not going to change my life, right?
If you are the type of person who can’t wake up early in the morning for school or work, Newton’s First Law is going to change your life.
I know it sounds ridiculous, but trust me on this. I just need your 10 minutes.
I have asked a lot of adults who have studied Physics this question:
“What is Newton’s First Law?”
The answer is either “I have forgotten” or “It is something to do with inertia, right?”
Let me help you to recap.
Newton’s First Law of Motion states that
“An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.”
What does that mean?
Does that mean we either stay at rest or always move? That doesn’t make sense.
For me, there is an easier way to understand.
Newton’s First Law is like Law of Sleeping, the way we normally sleep.
In the morning, it is very hard for all of us to wake up right? We always want to wake up at 6 am, but we can’t. Why?
We can explain it using Newton’s First Law.
According to Newton’s First Law, if we are at rest, we always want to be at rest.
The same thing applies to sleep. When we are sleeping, we always want to sleep.
We don’t like change. So we tend to stick with what we are doing. In our normal daily life, we called this as stubborn. In Physics, we called it inertia.
It is also very hard for us to go to sleep at night, right? We want to go to bed at 11 pm, but we always end up watching cute cat videos. Why?
Again, Newton’s First Law.
When we stay awake, we always want to stay awake.
How come we can still go to sleep at night and wake up early in the morning?
It is due to an unbalanced force. This force is really strong – The Alarm Clock!
Now you can tell your parents and teachers that you are simply following Newton’s First Law. It is the law that must be obeyed by everyone on this planet.
Start to demand for later school and working hours, but make sure you know Newton’s First Law.
